A Website that Feels Like a Welcome Mat

If your business lives online (and let’s be real—most do), then your website is more than just a digital brochure. It’s the front porch of your brand. The welcome mat. The first space people step into when they come across your work.

So, the big question is: Does your website feel like a place people want to be?

In my work as both a doula and web designer, I help women build businesses that feel as aligned as their birth plans—intentional, intuitive, and heart-centered. And when it comes to web design, there’s one thing I tell every client:

Your website should feel like your energy.

Not some cookie-cutter template, not something that just checks the boxes. It should reflect who you are, what you believe in, and how you want people to feel when they land there.

Let’s talk about how to make that happen.

1. First Impressions Matter (But Not in the Way You Think)

The second someone lands on your site, they’re asking:

  • Do I feel safe here?
  • Is this for me?
  • Can I trust this person?

They’re not just looking for your services; they’re tuning into the vibe.

Does your site feel calm or chaotic? Inviting or overwhelming? Clear or cluttered?

A beautiful site helps, but beauty without soul falls flat.

2. Tell Your Story, Not Just Your Services

People want to know what you do, but more importantly, they want to know why you do it.

What brought you here? What do you believe in? What kind of people do you love working with?

Your story creates connection. And connection creates trust.

When someone lands on your website and sees themselves in your story—even a sentence or two that makes them feel understood—they’re far more likely to stick around.

3. Use Language That Sounds Like You

Forget stiff, corporate jargon. If you wouldn’t say it out loud to a real person, don’t put it on your site.

Your voice matters. Speak the way you naturally do.

Whether you’re warm and nurturing, bold and feisty, calm and grounded—let that come through.

People don’t hire perfect. They hire real.

4. Make It Easy to Navigate

Your website might look beautiful, but if people can’t find what they need, they’ll bounce.

Here’s what to include in your top menu:

  • Home
  • About
  • Services (or Offerings)
  • Blog or Resources
  • Contact

And always, always have a clear call-to-action on your homepage. Whether it’s “Book a Free Call,” “Explore My Services,” or “Grab the Freebie,” make it obvious.

Simple = welcoming.

5. Photos That Invite, Not Intimidate

You don’t need professional headshots with studio lighting (unless you want them!). But you do need to show your face.

People connect with people.

Your photos should reflect your vibe—whether that’s cozy on your couch, in your kitchen sipping tea, or outside barefoot in the garden. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It just has to feel like you.

6. Create a Journey, Not Just a Destination

Think of your website like a path through the woods, not a concrete parking lot.

You want people to wander, explore, stay a while. That means:

  • Internal links to your other blog posts
  • A footer that shares more about you or links to your offers
  • Encouraging visitors to take the next step: follow you, read more, or reach out

We’re not forcing people into a funnel. We’re welcoming them into a relationship.

7. Your Website Should Feel Like a Breath of Fresh Air

When someone lands on your homepage, I want them to exhale.

To feel seen. Safe. Inspired.

Like they’ve finally found someone who gets them.

And that starts with building your website from the inside out.

Not just slapping on pretty fonts and photos, but aligning your brand with your energy, values, and vision.
